friday12:00pm - 5:00pmservice area: custer, fremont, huerfano countiesthe sharing center operates a food pantry weekly, on friday and saturday, and also provides emergency food boxes as an agent of the emergency food assistance hotline (2 1 1) administered in denver by hunger free colorado. in september, 2012, we had a total of 307 pantry visits, providing food assistance equating to 1,009 people (many come weekly). we have the highest designation of premier agency with care and share food bank for southern colorado where we purchase food at a low cost, in addition to local sale/case purchases and community donated food items. we are the distributors of low-income senior commodities monthly boxes for our county/usda. locally, we network with other non-profits and government entities through the local inter-agency task force to address the needs of our neighbors in the wet mountain valley. the center is totally dependent upon food/fund drives, community donations and foundational grants for operations. the operating budget of the sharing center for 2013 is projected at $28,000.00. the vast majority of our funds go directly to food purchases, which are allocated to patrons relationally to funds on hand. this practice ensures continued operation of this food pantry - so our neighbors have a local venue for help in time of need. regarding clothing and stuff we are the ultimate recycling center, and patrons simply chose any donated items they desire. current needs: a) continued funding for food purchases as more and more people need our assistance because of the current economic climate. b) completion of the portable building (electrical and plumbing for heater) to relocate the clothes closet and enlarge the food pantry. c) handicap accessible ramp into new facility for our many elderly and disabled patrons. these monies will ensure our ability to continue to address the food insecurity of this valley and surrounding area, helping to provide adequate nutrition to our senior citizens, underemployed, unemployed seasonal/construction/single-parent households, and children.for more information, please call.
